Information Technology (IT)

Resources for Improving IT Department Operations

  • What is Information Technology (IT)?

The IT Group typically manages the processing, storage, retrieval, transmission, maintenance and security of an organization’s internal information. This includes, but is not limited to, the administration of company email systems, business intelligence and enterprise resource planning [ERP] platforms, network setup, data backup and retrieval and document storage. The group also provides employees with day-to-day technology support to ensure that technology-related problems do not hinder productivity.
  • The History of IT

Information Technology as we know it today began to emerge in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although there were mechanical computational devices before that time, such as Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine, they scarcely resembled the mobile devices and massive server farms of today. The literal spark that ignited IT into its modern age was the discovery of electricity, which allowed information to be transmitted as electrical impulses. During the late nineteenth century, IBM’s Herman Hollerith invented the tabulating machine, which was used to process data from the 1890 census. Punch cards and tape were the norm for data storage during the early to mid-twentieth century. During the 1970s and ‘80s, semiconductors and integrated circuits replaced clunky vacuum tubes and punch cards. In the years that followed, companies like Apple, Microsoft, Cisco and IBM continued to innovate and have shaped IT into its current form.
  • Modern Trends in IT

Cloud computing is the buzzword lately. You cannot turn on the television or even listen to the radio without hearing of this mythical cloud. “Big data” and the emergence of analytics in all aspects of business have created demand for knowledge workers in fields such as Management Information Systems (MIS), Network Administration, Web Development and Data Science. Companies like IBM, SAP and Oracle are at the forefront of this analytical revolution.

Cybersecurity is another major issue near, or at, the top of the list for Chief Technology Officers (CTO) and Chief Information Officers (CIO). High profile data leaks at Target, Morgan Stanley and others have consumed headlines and caused stock prices to tumble. Companies that manage large amounts of sensitive customer information (banks, large retailers, payment processors, etc.) are scrambling to stay one step ahead of would-be cyber attackers.
