Banking: Overview, Products & Services

Resources Designed to Support and Improve Banking Operations

What is Banking?

The Banking industry provides a stable platform on which to perform financial transactions. Banks stimulate the growth of business by generating confidence and predictability in currency, and that growth in turn increases the demand for banking services. For instance, commercial banks, sometimes also referred to as retail banks, provide payment services, such as checking and credit card accounts, to customers. These banks then earn interest by lending customer deposits through various instruments, including mortgages, auto loans and lines of credit. Banks also enable business expansion by providing the liquidity that companies need to start and/or grow. Furthermore, with the increased use of the Internet, banks worldwide have integrated online financial services with their product offerings to stay competitive and relevant.

Org Charts

A typical bank is composed of several common sub-functions, or teams, that work together to provide customers (individuals and businesses) with various financial services (e.g., loans, deposit and savings accounts, etc.). Banking employees are also responsible for numerous back office activities that support customer-facing initiatives (company credit risk determination, fraud prevention activities, trade processing, loan processing and servicing activities, etc.). Browse our Banking organization chart page to learn about the roles and responsibilities of each major function. Then, download our org chart template (PDF, Visio, PPT) to plan and support banking operations improvement efforts.
